American Textile History Museum

American Textile History Museum is off Lowell Connector exit 5B (Thorndike St.), following signs to 491 Dutton St.. The museum chronicles 300 years of American textile production with displays of a large assortment of hand-powered tools and equipment, fabrics and finished clothing.
Handlooms, knitting machines and spinning wheels; textile-related decorative arts; and a variety of printed materials are included. The museum's costume collection focuses on everyday clothing and features garments worn by 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century Americans. Spinning and weaving demonstrations are given periodically.
Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.

Boott Cotton Mills Museum

Boott Cotton Mills Museum, 115 John St., is housed within the brick walls of a cotton mill built in 1873. Two floors of exhibits chronicle the age of Lowell's textile mills and the Industrial Revolution in general. On the first floor an orientation area gives way to a 1920s weave room containing 88 looms operating with the help of belts, shafts and pulleys.
Exhibits upstairs present Lowell's history from preindustrial days to the present. A slide presentation traces the development of the industrial age, and mill workers present audiovisual histories of their work and times.

Lowell National Historical Park

Lowell National Historical Park, off Lowell Connector exit 5B, following signs to the visitor center at 246 Market St., commemorates Lowell's pioneering role in the American Industrial Revolution. The park includes cotton textile mills, workers' housing, a 5.6-mile power canal system and industrial exhibits. The visitor center includes exhibits and a 20-minute video program titled "Lowell: The Industrial Revelation."
Guided walking tours are available. Boat and trolley tours are offered several times daily in summer. Reproductions of 1901 electric trolley cars operate daily early March to late November.

Patrick J. Mogan Cultural Center, 40 French St., was once a Boott Mill boardinghouse. The Mill Girls and Immigrants Exhibit explores the story of the Industrial Revolution by concentrating on Lowell's working people. The histories of the "mill girl" and immigrant work forces are explored.

Whistler House Museum of Art, 243 Worthen St., was the 1834 birthplace of James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Built in 1823, the house now contains a 19th- and 20th-century New England art collection that includes etchings by Whistler.
